This Watercare contract involved the upgrading of the wastewater network in 9 separate areas in the Howick and Pakuranga area in Auckland. The contract ran for two years and on completion in January 2017, CDS New Zealand Ltd finished ahead of programme and $1m under the contract value. This was achieved by using some innovative drilling techniques and methods including curved alignments, the use of restraint pipe and drilling to low grades under 0.5%.

Each of the 9 sites had their own challenges, 8 of the sites were installed by HDD with pipe ranging from 280mm OD PE to 400mm OD PE, through varying ground conditions including rock where a mud motor was required. CDS used a range of HDD pipe options including PVC restraint pipe which allows flexibility in tight areas meaning long pipestrings are not required.

The HDD installation was done by our DitchWitch® JT8020, JT4020 & JT2720 drill rigs where Marc Carmody was the project manager, Shawn Nicolson the site manager and Daniel Clough was the overall drill manager.
