CDS New Zealand Ltd completed the renewal of a stormwater pipeline between First Avenue and Second Avenue in Kingsland for Auckland Council. The project involved the trenchless installation of 62 m of DN300 PVC RESTRAIN pipe using pipe reaming.

To enable the installation, CDS first constructed a new 5m deep, 1800mm diameter manhole within First Avenue, allowing the restrained pipe to be installed directly from within the structure. Excavation encountered a series of underground tomos (voids) which slowed construction and required careful management to maintain ground stability.

The new pipeline was installed directly beneath two existing residential properties, requiring detailed monitoring of the houses throughout construction. Monitoring confirmed that no movement occurred as a result of the works, with only minor movement recorded due to weather-related expansion and contraction affecting nearby retaining walls.

Due to restricted access, the drill rig was positioned approximately 40 m behind private property, drilling down into an existing manhole before advancing drill rods through the existing pipeline and completing the pipe reaming installation back to the newly constructed manhole.

CDS worked closely with affected residents throughout the project to maintain communication and minimise disruption while delivering the upgrade in a constrained urban environment.
